Cultural Heritage
Our Mission is to protect and preserve the architectural, historical, and cultural heritage of southeast Missouri and southern Illinois, while supporting historic preservation throughout the region.
The Kellerman Foundation for Historic Preservation is dedicated to protecting, safeguarding, and celebrating the architectural, historical, and cultural heritage of southeast Missouri and southern Illinois. At its core, the foundation works to ensure that the stories embodied in historic places, buildings, and cultural artifacts remain accessible and meaningful for future generations.
To fulfill this mission, the Foundation:
• Supports Preservation and Restoration Projects
It funds and champions efforts to restore and stabilize historic structures, helping to retain the region’s unique built environment and preventing irreplaceable heritage from being lost. This includes both community-level restoration and broader initiatives that highlight heritage buildings.
• Encourages Public Engagement and Education
Through its exhibits, lectures, and public programs, the Foundation serves as an educational resource, bringing local history to life for residents, students, and visitors. Programs like speaker series on immigration or regional history illustrate how heritage connects to contemporary life and identity.
• Preserves Cultural Memory and Archives
The Foundation maintains historic archives and collections that document the stories, traditions, and daily lives of the region’s people. By preserving artifacts, photographs, and narratives, it provides a resource for researchers and community members alike.
• Fosters Community Connections
Historic preservation for the Kellerman Foundation is not only about buildings but also about people. The Foundation works to connect communities with their past, helping residents understand how local history shapes culture, identity, and community pride.
• Advocates for Regional Heritage
Beyond Cape Girardeau itself, the Foundation collaborates with partners throughout southeast Missouri and southern Illinois to support preservation-related activities, raising awareness of heritage issues and encouraging stewardship across the region.
History
The mission is rooted in the belief that historic preservation enriches communities.
It does this culturally, socially, and economically by fostering a deeper understanding of the past while contributing to revitalization and sustained community identity.
