History

Collections & Exhibitions

We have six major collections and many past and ongoing exhibitions

At the heart of the Kellerman History Museum is a commitment to preserving and interpreting the stories that shaped Cape Girardeau and the broader southeast Missouri region. The museum’s collections reflect the everyday lives, creative expressions, and civic foundations of the community, offering visitors a deeper understanding of how local history connects to larger regional and national narratives. Each object, image, and document serves as a tangible link between past generations and the present day.

The collections include a diverse range of materials assembled through the work of regional historians, families, artists, and institutions. Among them are research materials compiled by longtime local historian Frank Nickell, which provide valuable insight into the social and economic development of the area; records and materials associated with the Oliver Law Firm that illustrate the role of law and public service in community life; and photographic works by the Hinchey Brothers that capture the character, people, and places of Cape Girardeau across generations. Artistic works by Charles Rhinehart add an interpretive layer, reflecting the region’s landscapes and cultural identity through visual expression.

Taken together, the collections represent a shared community memory, one built from personal stories, professional records, and creative endeavors. They document how Cape Girardeau has evolved over time while honoring the individuals and institutions that helped shape its character. By preserving these materials and presenting them within a thoughtful historical framework, the Kellerman History Museum ensures that the legacy of the region remains accessible, meaningful, and relevant for future generations.

Past Exhibitions

The Kellerman Foundation has presented thoughtfully curated historical narratives of regional heritage

Over the years, the Kellerman Foundation has presented a wide range of historical and cultural presentations that reflect deep engagement with regional identity, artistic legacy, and pivotal moments in American history.

A State Divided explored the complex social and political tensions in Missouri during the Civil War era, while Blueprints for Democracy examined how architectural and civic design shaped local governance and public life. Don and Rubye Kraft celebrated the creative partnership and artistic contributions of the Krafts to the cultural fabric of southeast Missouri.

Presentations such as Grant Takes Command and J.B. Legg honored influential figures whose leadership left lasting marks on military and civic history. The presentation on M. Charles Rhinehart honored a singular artistic voice whose work captured the spirit of the region, and Missouri Courthouses looked at the role of these civic landmarks as centers of justice, community, and architectural heritage. The Nickell Regional Heritage Archive brought focus to preserved local records that document everyday life and institutional history, and Private Passions offered a window into the personal interests and collections that reveal broader cultural patterns.

Overall, presentations like Women in Bronze and The Erlbacher Family emphasized both artistic achievement and the personal narratives that enrich our understanding of the area’s heritage, reinforcing the Foundation’s commitment to preserving and interpreting the diverse stories of southeast Missouri.
